Worcester Bosch CDI Boiler Repair in Birmingham – ERP Pump and PCB Fault
At Afterglow Plumbing & Heating Limited, we regularly carry out Worcester Bosch boiler repairs in Birmingham, diagnosing faults affecting heating performance, hot water and boiler components.
One recent Worcester Bosch CDI boiler repair involved a circulation pump that was running continuously, even when there was no demand for central heating or hot water.
After investigating the fault and consulting Worcester Bosch technical support, we identified an issue involving a previously fitted ERP circulation pump and the boiler’s existing printed circuit board (PCB).
This is a useful example of why correctly diagnosing a Worcester Bosch boiler fault is so important before replacing expensive components.
Worcester Bosch CDI Pump Running Constantly
The customer had a Worcester Bosch CDI combination boiler with a circulation pump that appeared to be operating continuously.
Although a boiler pump may continue running for a short period after heating demand has ended, known as pump overrun, it should operate according to the boiler’s designed control sequence.
In this case, the pump was running when it should not have been.
The constant pump operation had also contributed to a problem with the boiler’s automatic air vent (AAV), which was leaking.
During our boiler fault diagnosis in Birmingham, we investigated why the pump was not switching off correctly.
ERP Pump Fitted to an Older Worcester Bosch CDI Boiler
Our investigation revealed that the boiler’s original circulation pump had previously been replaced with a newer ERP (Energy-related Products) compliant pump.
ERP pumps are designed to meet modern energy-efficiency requirements and generally consume less electricity than older circulation pumps.
However, when upgrading certain older Worcester Bosch CDI boilers to an ERP pump, compatibility with the existing boiler electronics must be checked.
Following discussions with Worcester Bosch technical support, we established that this particular pump replacement also required a compatible PCB.
The ERP pump had been installed without the corresponding PCB upgrade.
This meant the boiler’s existing electronics were not correctly matched to the replacement pump arrangement.
Why Did the Worcester Bosch CDI PCB Need Replacing?
The PCB (printed circuit board) is effectively the boiler’s electronic control centre.
It manages important functions, including:
- Central heating operation
- Hot water demand
- Circulation pump control
- Boiler ignition and safety sequences
- Communication between electrical components
On this particular Worcester Bosch CDI boiler, the existing PCB was not suitable for the ERP pump configuration that had been installed.
Worcester Bosch confirmed that the correct PCB upgrade was required for the pump arrangement.
This demonstrates why replacing a boiler pump is not always as straightforward as removing the old component and fitting a new one.
Important: Not every Worcester Bosch CDI boiler fitted with an ERP pump requires a PCB replacement. Requirements depend on the exact boiler model, pump type and manufacturer-approved conversion arrangement.
Worcester Bosch Automatic Air Vent Leaking
Another issue identified during the repair was a leaking automatic air vent (AAV).
The automatic air vent allows trapped air to escape from the boiler’s heating circuit.
With the circulation pump operating continuously, the air vent was subjected to prolonged circulation conditions.
The leaking AAV required attention alongside the underlying pump-control fault.
It is important to establish the cause of a boiler fault rather than simply replacing the component showing visible symptoms.
Why Professional Worcester Bosch Boiler Fault Diagnosis Matters
Incorrect diagnosis can result in unnecessary replacement parts, additional labour costs and repeated visits.
At Afterglow Plumbing & Heating, our approach to boiler repairs in Birmingham is to investigate the underlying cause of a fault before recommending replacement components.
Whether it is a Worcester Bosch pump fault, boiler PCB failure, leaking automatic air vent, diverter valve problem or heating circulation issue, identifying the correct fault is essential.
We also use manufacturer technical guidance where necessary to confirm component compatibility and repair requirements.
