Walk-In & Accessible Shower Installation in Hodge Hill, Birmingham
At Afterglow Plumbing & Heating, we recently completed a walk-in shower installation in Hodge Hill, Birmingham, for a customer who needed to make their existing shower easier and more practical to use.
The customer’s husband has dementia, and the existing shower enclosure was making it increasingly difficult for his wife to help him safely get in and out of the shower.
Rather than carrying out an unnecessary full bathroom refurbishment, we adapted the existing shower area to create a much more open and accessible walk-in shower.
The Problem With the Existing Shower Cubicle
The original enclosed shower arrangement had restricted access, which made it difficult for our customer to assist her husband when showering.
For somebody living with dementia, a simpler and more open bathroom layout can also make everyday routines easier to manage.
Our aim was therefore to create a low-level, easy-access shower area with a wide entrance and enough room for the customer to comfortably assist her husband when required.
Installing the New Walk-In Shower
We removed the existing shower enclosure and installed a new 1700mm low-level shower tray, providing a large and easily accessible showering area.
Instead of replacing the old enclosure with another shower cubicle, we fitted an 800mm fixed glass shower screen. This creates a wide walk-in entrance without a shower door getting in the way.
The new layout provides considerably more space and makes getting in and out of the shower much easier.
Waterproof Aqua Panels for a Clean, Low-Maintenance Finish
As part of the shower installation, we also fitted Aqua Panels to the shower walls.
Bathroom wall panels are a great alternative to traditional tiles around a shower. They provide a waterproof, easy-to-clean surface with fewer joints and grout lines to maintain.
The Aqua Panels also allowed us to give the newly adapted shower area a clean, modern finish while providing a practical waterproof surface designed for everyday use.
Combined with the new low-level shower tray and fixed glass screen, the finished installation created a smart, open and much more practical showering space.
