Worcester boiler not heating hot water

Worcester CDI Compact Boiler Repair in Birmingham – Hot Water Running Cold

At Afterglow Heating, we recently attended a call-out in Birmingham for a Worcester Bosch CDI Compact boiler where the customer was experiencing hot water repeatedly running cold while the shower was in use. This is a common issue we see with combination boilers, particularly when there is a restriction in the domestic hot water system.

Thanks to same-day diagnosis and repair, our Birmingham plumbers were able to restore reliable hot water quickly and efficiently.

The Problem: Shower Keeps Running Cold on a Worcester CDI Compact

The customer reported that the hot water would initially run warm, but quickly turn cold once the shower had been running for a short period. The boiler would then shut down before attempting to relight.

On our first visit, we carried out full diagnostic checks on the boiler and identified the following symptoms:

    • Hot water temperature rapidly climbing to around 80°C
  • Boiler locking out to protect itself
  • Inconsistent hot water at taps and shower

These symptoms strongly indicated a blocked domestic hot water plate heat exchanger, a well-known issue on combi boilers in hard water areas.

Diagnosis: Blocked Hot Water Plate Heat Exchanger

During testing, we found that the boiler was unable to transfer heat effectively into the hot water circuit. Because of the blockage:

  • Heat could not dissipate properly
  • The boiler overheated very quickly
  • The safety system shut the boiler down

This explains why the shower kept running cold even though the boiler was firing.

Same-Day Worcester Boiler Repair in Birmingham

Once the fault was confirmed, we carried out the repair on the same day, replacing the blocked hot water plate heat exchanger and flushing the system where required.

After the repair:

  • Hot water temperature stabilised correctly
  • Shower performance returned to normal
  • Boiler operated without overheating or shutdowns

If you’re experiencing similar issues, our boiler repair Birmingham service covers all Worcester Bosch combi boilers, including the CDI Compact range.

Why Does My Hot Water Keep Going Cold?

This is one of the most common boiler repair questions we get in Birmingham. Typical causes include:

    • Blocked plate heat exchanger
  • Limescale build-up
  • Faulty flow sensor
  • Reduced water flow through the boiler

On Worcester CDI Compact boilers, a blocked heat exchanger is often the main culprit, especially in areas with hard water.

Worcester CDI Compact Hot Water Problems Explained

The Worcester CDI Compact is a reliable boiler, but like all combi boilers, it relies on good water flow through the heat exchanger. When this becomes restricted:

  • The boiler overheats rapidly
  • Hot water cuts out under demand
  • Showers become unusable

Regular servicing and early repair can prevent these issues from escalating into more expensive breakdowns.
